AT AROUND eight thirty, Sam walked the few miles into town. âIâll call you if I want a ride back,â he told Jeffrey when he refused his offer of a ride. âPromise.â
Jeffrey clearly thought he was crazy to walk in the rain. Sam didnât care. Since Wesley left the island on Saturday morning, Sam had been distracted. Lost. Heâd done his job. Theyâd reworked the script, and Cyrus had approved the changes. Heâd pretended everything was fine. But nothing was fine.
Jeffrey drove off in the direction of Cyrusâs rental home. Sam knew he was trying not to bounce with excitement at the prospect of another dateâhe wouldnât begrudge Jeffrey his happiness. At least someoneâs happy.
He needed to shrug off the gloom. Heâd spent the past six months working toward one goal: getting Wesley back. And heâd fucked it up as surely as heâd fucked up their relationship. Heâd pushed Wesley away when heâd meant to bring him back. And in the process, heâd realized they really were over.
Wesley was right. Itâs time to move on. If Wesley couldnât see that he was trying his hardest, it wasnât fucking worth it to keep trying. Even he had his limits. Wesley had pushed him beyond them. Fuck him. If he canât realize we were good together, well, just fuck him. Only he wasnât angry with Wesley. Not really. He was pissed as hell at himself.
Somewhere along the way, trying to get Wesley back had become his focus. Heâd gone into it for the best of reasons: because he loved Wesley. It had become a job like any other. He did his research. He plotted his approach, and he understood the characters. Heâd played his part well, but it hadnât worked. He didnât even know what to do if he did get Wesley back. He had no fucking clue how to make things better.
Time to let it go.
By the time he climbed the stairs to the bar at the edge of the harbor, Samâs running shoes were pretty much soaked. He pulled off the hood of his rain jacket and the serverâs eyes grew wide. He plastered on a smile as she giggled and led him over to a table on the deck.
âCan I get you a drink, Mr. Carson?â she said as he hung his dripping jacket on the back of his chair.
âScotch. Neat, please.â
âOf course.â She flashed him a big smile, then leaned in and handed him a menu. âCan I have your autograph? Can you make it out to me? Paula?â
âSure.â He signed the menu and she trotted off a moment later.
From his seat, he could see Neverland at the docks. If the weather was better, he might take her out in the morning or maybe kayak on Bald Head Creek. He wasnât in any of the shots tomorrow, and he needed something better to do with the time off than sleep in. Sleep never helped when he felt antsy. He needed to get out and do something. Anything. Even a morning run in the rain would be better than this.
